Hepatitis C-An Infectious Disease

Hepatitis C is a disease caused via infection in liver. Liver is the biggest organ of your body. Its function is to get rid of harmful substances (toxins) and waste from your blood.

Transmission:

Few years before, sexual activities were considered as the main source of transmission of Hepatitis C; however, new studies revised it to be a rare source.  Mainly, Hepatitis C is transferred from the blood of the infected people. If you ever have shared a needle, had a blood transfusion, snorted drugs, underwent a kidney transplant, or any other such activity then you have a risk of Hepatitis C. The two methods to check the hepatitis C includes a blood test and liver biopsy.

Blood exposure:

Accidental exposure of blood is the main reason for the dispersion of HCV.  At factories and hospital, needles, sticks, blood spatter and open wounds can be reasoned of HCV.  Whereas during recreational activities like hiking, swimming, or contact sports like the slam dancing blood exposure is common.

Sexual exposure:
As blood transfusion also takes place during sexual activities. Thus, the sexual intercourse can be sourced to transfer a virus of Hepatitis C. However, it is not the only source as considered as earlier.

Body piercing and tattoos:

If the proper sterilization method is not followed, then the HCV, infected blood can be transferred from tattooing dyes, inkpots, stylets and piercing implement.

Shared personal-care items:

Sharing of the personal items like toothbrushes, razors, scissors, other manicure, pedicure and bathing equipment can be a source of hepatitis C if contaminated with blood. Whereas casual contacts like hugging, kissing and share eating or cooking utensils are not a source of it.

Vertical:

HCV can be transmitted from mother to a child during the birth process, but it is not apparently associated with the process of breast feeding.

Treatment:

During early symptoms of Hepatitis C doctors just recommend healthy food, plenty of fluids, bed rest and avoid of alcohol. This can help to eliminate earlier stage Hepatitis C. But in case of persistent hepatitis C, doctors will use synthetic forms of protein interferon. Such treatment improves liver function. The most serious complication of Hepatitis C is cirrhosis of liver and liver Cancer. That’s why it is wise to consult a physician as soon as you experience mild symptoms.

Latest Breakthrough:

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved two drugs boceprevir and telaprevir (Incivek) for hepatitis C, which helps to stops the enzyme that helps the virus reproduce. This research was developed under supervision of Dr. Ira M.Jacobson from Presbyterian Hospital of New York.

This breakthrough definitely helps to reduce the chronic effects of Hepatitis C.
